What does Ecozoic living mean?
Ecozoic living is a way of life that promotes the harmonious relationship and co-existence of the various creatures and elements of the planet.

Permaculture
CELL’s layout is based on a philosophy of design called PERMACULTURE that keeps in mind ecological balance, thus all creature have a place. While we are a farm, it is a farm that promotes an agricultural way of life that maintains the place of as many creatures as possible. In CELL, we have an area for human activity, for raising vegetables and farm animals, for growing fruit trees and other trees indigenous to all regions, and a wildlife area. We are also conscious that the soil on which we all walk on and on which the plants thrive is home for microorganisms that equally necessary for ecological balance. We respect each other’s existence by living in harmony with each other. As guest in our community, we hope you can contribute to maintaining this ecological balance through the following:

* Respecting the wildlife zone by not wantonly intruding into the area (explain that we visit wildlife zone rarely and that this zone is the place of creatures that seek a wildlife habitat; they also visit us rarely)

* Eating only in the kitchen area (thereby ants can do their work of eating our excess in the appropriate place; we respect their role in the scheme of things; we do not invite them through our crumbs then kill them)

* Using only biodegradable soap and shampoo because those with anti-bacterial agents kill the microbial life necessary for this place to thrive

* We respect the community’s need for rest and regeneration by limiting active human activity to 10 pm after which we need reduces activity/silence to rest (this is for CELL community and nearby houses)
 

Agricultural that is suited to our climate and biogeographical context
• Bamboo structure (bamboo is indigenous to our region)
• Open for natural air flow and heat management
• Given this, we request that we carry ourselves in such a way that is compatible with such an architecture:
      * Please remove footwear in all the buildings so that the wood will not be
      damages; it also helps us maintaining the area with minimum effort
      * No smoking in all the buildings; smoking in bonfire area
      * No unnecessary jumping or activity that may destroy the structure (playing,
      hanging, pushing, etc.)
      * Please report to us sightings of termites (this is an example of one other
      aspect of ecological balance: we appropriately others’ space; we kill the
      termites that try to use the bamboo but we do not kill termite colonies that are
      soil inhabitants).

Recycling of Water
All pipes from the sinks and the bathrooms lead to parts of the farm and therefore the wastewater that go through these pipes serves as nourishment for the plants. This is also another reason why we request everyone to use biodegradable soap. Other soaps with additional chemical agents may harm the plants or its partner microorganisms.

Water Management
Nature teaches us that all waste is life-giving (example is oxygen which is a plant waste that is very important for animals). With this guiding us, CELL has set up processes and systems of managing our waster so that they become life-giving to other creatures.

To process human waster, all comfort rooms have pipes leading to the biodigester which separates our solid and liquid waste. The solid waste with the help of microorganisms become a source of gas (biogas production process) and fertilizer, and the liquid waste is filtered until such time that it can be used to water plants. This is again one reason why we request the use of biodegradable soap because it allows the microorganisms to enjoy their life and to perform their function to maintain ecological balance and provide us with cooking fuel. For the maintenance of the biodigester, please refrain from flashing tissue paper and other non-human waste in the toilet bowls because it will destroy the biodigester’s filtering process. Soap and trash cans are provided in the comfort rooms for our use.

We also manage all the waste we produce in the process of our human activity. Please take time to practice segregation of food waste in our kitchen (please read labels). Since it will be difficult for us to manage the waste of our visitors, we request them to bring home their food wrappers and other waste which they have brought with them. Your biodegradable waste is welcome but they have to be placed in the appropriate bins in the kitchen or in the trash cans of the comfort rooms.

Vibrant Community Life
CELL promotes community life among those who are here, both human and non-human, and encourages everyone to contribute to respectful and peaceful community buildings. We would like to stress that before humans inhabited this area, it was already a thriving community which will be here even after we leave. In this light we are visitors and should carry ourselves appropriately.

Likewise, we also promote healthy community life among the human present, and for this reason, CELL is also nuclear, drug, alcohol, tobacco, violence, and graffiti free zone. We would appreciate your respecting all the staff who may at one point remind us of how to carry ourselves in CELL.

Everyone will have the time for earth care work as contribution to nurture our community and we hope we do it with respect and care.
